A 21-year-old man, Usman Jafar, dressed in military
camouflage, narrowly escaped lynching yesterday after he was caught with
a stolen iPhone 6 handset in Warri, Delta State.
But for the quick intervention of police, the suspect, who is from Adamawa State, would have been lynched.
The suspect was said to have stolen the handset from the
owner, whose companion gave the thief a free ride on, Sunday night, and
was yesterday at Robison Plaza, the busy phone market in Warri, to
unlock the phone when he was apprehended.
An eyewitness told Vanguard: “A couple met the army officer
at a pub on Sunday. They even bought food and drinks for him. As they
were leaving, he joined their car and they
dropped him off before noticing that their iPhone had disappeared from the car.

“As soon as the lady, who owns the phone spotted him and raised alarm, he took to his
heels. He drew out a dagger to scare the advancing mob, but it was in.vain. The mob caught him and started battering him before police came in and eventually handed him over to military guards at the home of Gen. David Ejoor (retd.) in Warri.”

LN gathered that the Gen. Ejoor’s military details, after
dispersing the edgy crowd itching to pounce on the suspect, later handed
him to men from the 3 Battalion, Effurun Barracks, of the Nigerian
Army.
When contacted, Maj. Ahmed Abdulkadir, Commander, 3
Battalion, said that the suspect was an impersonator, adding “the man is
not a soldier.”
Another military source, however, revealed that
investigation was still ongoing on the matter, adding that the suspect
was in critical condition at an undisclosed hospital.
“He was too incoherent to give full details of his true
identity and what transpired. He is still being observed,” the source
said.
